September 2025 Recipients - $6100 awarded
1) West Coast Learning Hub (Port Alberni) - $3750
We will run weekly sessions from October 2015 to June 2026 that combine academic support, peer mentorship, and inclusive community building for 2SLGBTQIA+ youth. Each session includes space for reflection, identity-affirming discussion, and access to academic support. Monthly workshops will focus on themes such as navigating systems, queer leadership, harm reduction, and wellness strategies. This format supports youth in better understanding systemic discrimination and how to navigate or resist it. Creative and expressive activities will also promote self-esteem, healing, and social connection, all of which positively impact mental health. By connecting youth with queer mentors and allies, we help reduce isolation and foster pride and resilience.
2) Building Bridges Project (Cowichan Valley Youth Services) - $2350
Cowichan Valley Youth Services (CVYS) will launch separate psycho educational groups for caregivers and youth. The caregivers’ group will run 4–5 sessions (over a one month period) and feature guest speakers, including health professionals and community members with lived experience. Topics will include gender-affirming care, the impacts of transitioning, and strategies for providing effective support. Sessions will also incorporate a therapeutic peer-support component to reduce isolation and build caregiver confidence.
For youth, the group will prioritize peer and emotional support, with supplemental education. CVYS has identified a significant increase in the need for safe, inclusive spaces for 2SLGBTQIA+ youth. This group will foster connection, resilience, and access to resources. Together, these groups will enhance caregiver knowledge, reduce stigma, and strengthen the well-being of both caregivers and youth, contributing to a healthier and more inclusive Cowichan Valley community.
